Margot Robbie reveals why she’ll never play Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue has previously said if a biopic of her life is ever made, fellow Australian Margot Robbie would be her dream choice to portray her.

Unfortunately, Robbie – though clearly flattered – made it clear this week she is adamant she is not the actor for the part.

Minogue revealed in an interview with E! Online in 2023 that Robbie would be her ideal actor for a hypothetical biopic.

“Margot Robbie, in my dreams,” she said. “She’d have the Australian accent down, that’s for sure.”

Apparently Robbie had no idea of Minogue’s comments when interviewed on Tuesday by UK radio presenter Scott Mills.

“You know Margot, Kylie [Minogue] has said a few times that she would love you to play her in a movie,” Mills told Robbie, who is promoting her latest movie, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, alongside Colin Farrell.

“She did not,” Robbie responded in disbelief. “Why has no one ever told me this before. That is wild information.”

But when Mills proceeded to ask her if she would do it, the answer was a little unexpected.

“I am beyond honoured,” Robbie replied before explaining why she’s turn it down.

“Of course I couldn’t do it – I can’t sing,” she said. “I can’t sing like Kylie.”

When it was suggested the singing vocals could be added by another singer, Robbie flatly refused.

“No, I don’t like it when people can’t actually sing and do a singing movie, you know?” she said.

Robbie went to to explain that she had met Minogue previously.

“Kylie, by the way, is the first concert I ever went to, Kylie Fever Tour,” she said.

“Years later, when I was over in America at this point, I got a call from my team being like, ‘Kylie Minogue would like to meet up with you’.”

Robbie said she jumped at the offer and found Minogue to be “the coolest, warmest, most divine creature you’ve ever met”.

“[Minogue] was just like, ‘Oh I just, you know, thought you’re an Aussie and I’m an Aussie and we’ve never met. We should probably hang out’,” she said.

Robbie said that the pair – who coincidently both appeared on  Neighbours early in their careers, ended up having cocktails.

“We just got drunk together, it was just the best … She just wanted to hang,” she said.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey – Robbie’s first role since 2023’s Barbie – is described as a “funny, fantastical, sweeping adventure”.

Robbie and Farrell play two strangers who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding and have the chance to relive important moments from their respective pasts.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is in Australian cinemas now
