Pop star Britney Spears has gone into rehab, just weeks after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Page Six said a rep for the singer had confirmed she had voluntarily checked herself into an unnamed treatment facility.
It comes just over a month after the Toxic singer was arrested by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County after reports her black BMW sedan was being driven erratically “in and out of lanes … speeding” .
Police allegedly discovered an unknown substance inside the vehicle and Spears is believed to have been on a cocktail of alcohol and drugs.
TMZ reported that she was arrested at 9.30pm local time on March 4 and held overnight by police.
She was booked to appear in court on May 4.
At the time, a source told Page Six that 44-year-old Spears was “incredibly emotional”, as well as “ashamed and embarrassed” about the incident.
“It’s been a very hard couple of months,” they said.
Late last month, Spears broke her silence on her arrest, sharing videos in an Instagram post with son Jayden James, 19.
“Thank you guys for all your support… spending time with family and friends is such a blessing!” she wrote.
On Monday, Australian time, TMZ reported that Spears had finally agreed to enter an undisclosed rehab program somewhere in the US.
“She realizes she hit rock bottom,” one source said.
While another noted that “she knows strategically this will look good in front of the judge – that she’s taking it seriously”.
TMZ noted that Spears had had issues with alcohol and the use of prescription amphetamine Adderall for years.
Last month, Spears’ representative Cade Hudson told Page Six the driving incident was “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable”.
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” he said.
“Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
He said Spears’ loved ones would come up with an “overdue needed plan” to improve the troubled pop star’s well being.
“Her boys (Jayden and brother Sean Preston, 20) are going to be spending time with her,” Hudson said.
Spears regained control of her multimillion-dollar fortune and her personal affairs when a conservatorship previously run by her father Jamie Spears was terminated in November 2021.
In recent years, however, her online behaviour – including posting bizarre videos of herself gyrating in skimpy clothes and bearing knives – has alarmed fans.
In the days before her arrest, she posted a series of wild dance videos to her more than 42 million followers. Her Instagram account was then deactivated.
