Australian actress Nicole Kidman has spoken about coming out of her shell after filing for divorce from Keith Urban.
Speaking for the first time about the couple’s surprise split, the 58-year-old told Variety that 2025 was a quiet year for her.
“I had other things going on. I was in my shell,” she said.
“Now I’m in a place of saying, ‘2026. Here we go’.”
Kidman touched on her personal life over the past year in the wide-ranging interview that also promoted her latest projects — a sequel to Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock and the new Prime series Scarpetta, based on the Patricia Cornwall novels.
Variety asked Kidman if she was “doing all right”.
“You mentioned earlier that last year was a rough one. I think a lot of people would ask, are you doing all right since your separation?” the journalist said.
“I am, because I’m always going to be moving toward what’s good. What I’m grateful for is my family and keeping them as is and moving forward. That’s that,” Kidman said.
“Everything else I don’t discuss out of respect. I’m staying in a place of, ‘We are a family’, and that’s what we’ll continue to be.
“My beautiful girls, my darlings, who are suddenly women.”
Variety also asked if Kidman would remain in Nashville after her split from country singer Urban.
“Yes. We have our life here. I’m part of the city and community for 20 years. It’s my home.”

‘Biggest inspiration’
Last week, Kidman’s eldest daughter with Urban, Sunday Kidman-Urban, said her mother was “biggest inspiration in life”.
The 17-year-old star said her desire to become a model was sparked after she accompanied her mum to photo shoots as a child.
“I definitely gained a lot of interest from those experiences and especially being privileged enough to experience them at a young age,” Sunday told the March issue of Elle Australia magazine.
“My mum is someone who has always been so creative and my biggest inspiration in life. She’s a key part of everything I do.”
Kidman and Urban encouraged Sunday and their other daughter, Faith, 15, to chase their dreams from a young age.
Sunday — who made her runway debut for Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2025 collection in October 2024 — recalled: “Something that’s always been followed in my house is doing, not just saying.
“It basically means that if you say you’re going to do something, stick to your word and do it. Don’t just talk about how much you want to, but actually put your mind to it and get it done.”
But Sunday’s ultimate dream is to become a filmmaker, an interest sparked after watching Parasite, the 2019 Oscar-winning dark comedy-thriller.
Kidman’s Scarpetta premiered in Australia on March 11, with the star-studded cast including her, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bobby Cannavale and Simon Baker.
It is based on US crime writer Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling Kay Scarpetta novels, which have sold more than 120 million copies worldwide since the character’s debut in 1990.
Kidman plays medical examiner Scarpetta, while Curtis plays her sister, Dorothy Farinelli. Australian star Baker is FBI profiler Benton Wesley.
