Pop star Katy Perry and former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau have seemingly confirmed their relationship in a very public way, and social media thinks it’s entitled to pass judgment.

Rumours of a romance between the pair first emerged in July when Perry and Trudeau were spotted dining together in Montreal. 

This week images emerged of the pair kissing on Perry’s yacht as it sailed off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, recently.

Trudeau separated from wife Sophie in 2023 after a relationship spanning two decades. They have three children – sons Xavier and Hadrien and daughter Ella-Grace.

The couple said they decided to split after “many meaningful and difficult conversations”.

In July, Perry amicably split from her husband of nine years, actor Orlando Bloom – with whom she shares five-year-old daughter Daisy.

While the high-profile pair are both eminently single, that hasn’t stopped social media passing judgment on the apparent relationship.

“What kind of guy @JustinTrudeau is? He is not sincere to his wife and kids even. Leave the country which he left in tatters. Shameless,” one user wrote.

Trudeau, 53, was Canadian PM for 10 years before announcing his resignation in January.

And Perry, 40, who for some reason is a divisive figure, also came in for criticism.

“Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry. One pretended to be an astronaut. One pretended to be a Prime Minister,” another user posted in an apparent reference to Perry’s space tour on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin.

Perry came in for ridicule after kissing the ground on her return from the 11-minute trip into zero gravity.

“I feel super connected to love,” Perry said after landing back on Earth.

She was holding a daisy flower, which she took into space, to remind her of her daughter, Daisy.

In photos, first published by The Daily Mail, Perry, dressed in black one-piece swimsuit, has her arms wrapped around a shirtless Trudeau. Another shows the couple kissing in a passionate embrace.

Although the images are blurry, Trudeau can be identified by a recognisable tattoo on his left arm.

“She pulled up her boat next to a small public whale-watching boat, then they started making out,” an onlooker was quoted as saying by The Daily Mail.

“I didn’t realise who she was with until I saw the tattoo on the guy’s arm, and I immediately realised it was Justin Trudeau.” 

Trudeau’s tattoo is a combination of two artworks, which he explained in a 2012 tweet.

“My tattoo is planet Earth inside a Haida raven. The globe I got when I was 23; the Robert Davidson raven for my 40th birthday,” he wrote. 

Trudeau’s father Pierre, was made an honorary member of the Haida tribe in 1976 during his own tenure as Canadian prime minister.

Speculation about Trudeau and Perry’s burgeoning relationship began in July when the pair were photographed dining at Montreal’s Le Violin restaurant while Perry was in Canada for her Lifetimes tour. Trudeau was spotted at her show in Montreal two days later.

Neither have addressed their apparent romance, but Bloom reacted to a an article in The Onion satirising the tryst that stated that he and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel had been seen on a date.

In response to the joke, Bloom posted a series of clapping emojis in the comment section.
