Australian internet usage surges upwards

Our thirst for web downloads is rising, new statistics reveal.

For the first time ever, the nation’s total downloads exceeded one million terabytes in a three month period, the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed.

The ABS Internet Activity survey, which collected information from 71 internet providers, found that we downloaded 1.15 exabytes between October and December last year, an increase of 33 per cent.

Total internet subscribers now number 12.69 million, an increase of two per cent since 2013.

The domination of broadband is almost complete, with only 99 per cent of users connecting via other methods.

The number of households with an internet subscription rose almost five per cent last year to 10 million.
