Aldi announces big change to favourite customer ‘ritual’

Aldi has announced a big change to its famous middle aisle — where you can find anything from air fryers to beauty products and garden gnomes.
From this month, customers will no longer have to rush to the store and jostle with shoppers to secure their favoured “Special Buy” items.
For the first time, the twice-weekly specials will be available for home delivery via the German supermarket chain’s partnership with DoorDash.
Aldi last year ramped up its fight against the major supermarkets by partnering with DoorDash to offer a home delivery service for groceries, while Coles and Woolworths delivery orders can be placed via third-party platforms and the supermarkets’ websites.
The booming grocery home delivery market is valued at more than $15 billion and predicted to be worth more than three times that by 2034.
Aldi said the cost of convenience was that some items on the platform would cost more compared to the in-store price.

Victoria will be the first state to roll out the Special Buys delivery, starting on Wednesday (January 7), and the rest of Australia will roll out from January 21.
“Aldi’s famous middle aisle and its unique products have long drawn shoppers to Aldi stores on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, thanks to its wide range of high-quality and limited-time products at great value across a variety of categories,” said DoorDash APAC vice-president Simon Rossi.
“Now these products will be conveniently available to customers for the first time ever, through on-demand delivery, thanks to DoorDash.”
Aldi group director Simon Padovani-Ginies said the partnership with DoorDash was a “game-changer for shoppers”.
“Our Aldi Special Buys have become almost ritualistic to some shoppers, who mark their calendars and scour our catalogues regularly for products they will certainly be excited about,” he said.
“Launching Special Buys on DoorDash means that shoppers can now get high-quality everyday grocery essentials and our Good Different range of Special Buys items delivered direct to their doors.”
Busy Victorian parents will be able to beat the back-to-school rush from the comfort of their own homes, by getting all their school supplies — from stationery to backpacks and shoes — delivered direct to their doors.
Just like in store, Aldi’s Special Buys range will drop on the DoorDash app on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Any Special Buys products that require a two-person lift will be excluded from delivery.
All customers within the DoorDash service areas will have access to Aldi’s grocery and Special Buys products on DoorDash.
