Exclusive: Bank scammers impersonate Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

We now live in the age of digital subterfuge.

At AMP Headquarters, the anti-fraud team has been testing new technology to identify instances of identity theft.

The bank can match customers’ verification videos with their documentation to ensure they are the same person.

Recently it detected a doozy – scammers pretending to be Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, trying to open an account.

“One of them flashed up as Albo,” John Arnott, director of AMP Bank GO, said.

“We recognised that the identification he was using to try to verify his account was actually fake.”

The selfie video included a counterfeit NSW driver’s licence, with a man saying “My name is Anthony Albanese and I am an AMP Bank GO customer”.

Albanese is not alone. There have been 4600 confirmed cases of bank impersonation scams in Australia this year alone.

Tech expert Stephen Fenech says, for now, verification with selfie videos are a solution for banks to tell whether or not a person is who they are.
