The Get Down is set in New York City in the 1970s and centres on a group of cunning teenagers from the South Bronx.

Mr Luhrmann, who has been working on the concept for the past 10 years, said in a statement: ā€œI’ve been obsessed with the idea of how a city in its lowest moment, forgotten and half destroyed, could give birth to such creativity and originality in music, art and culture.ā€

Mr Luhrmann will direct three of the 13 episodes, and serve as an executive producer.

The show will premiere on Netflix in 2016.
